Making Sure Your Elderly Loved One Is Eating Right

June 12, 2023

Seniors often have difficulty getting all the nutrients required for a balanced diet, making it important to ensure they receive proper nutrition. If you take care of an elderly parent or grandparent, you can take steps to help them eat well.

To find out why your loved one is not eating well, pay attention to their behavior and ask them questions. Encourage honesty and openness and reassure them that they are not a burden. Some causes of poor nutrition include a decreased sensitivity to smell and taste, medication side effects, limited incomes, and physical difficulties.

To ensure seniors get proper nutrition, offer them whole and unprocessed foods that are high in calories, such as healthy fats, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and protein-rich foods. Make food that is aromatic and flavorful, and promote healthy snacking between meals. Additionally, make mealtime a family occasion to combat loneliness and depression.
